John Mooney - SMC006
John Mooney (1862-1950) was a Kirkwall businessman, an Orkney historian, and was also the founder of the Orkney Antiquarian Society. A plaque dedicated to John Mooney can be found in the presbytery of St Magnus Cathedral.

During his life he was the director of R. Garden Ltd and was also a Kirkwall Town Councillor. He contributed many papers to the Orkney Antiquarian Society and also wrote many books on Orkney History which include 'Eynhallow', 'St Magnus Earl of Orkney', and 'The Cathedral and Royal Burgh of Kirkwall'. He is recognised as one of Orkney's greatest historians and was an expert on many aspects of St Magnus Cathedral and its history.

His son, the Reverend Harold Mooney wrote the present Cathedral guidebook.
